Arrests in Canada Over Nijjar Killing Heighten Tensions with India

In a recent development that has strained diplomatic relations further between Canada and India, Canadian authorities announced the arrest of three individuals implicated in the assassination of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar was murdered in June of the previous year in Surrey, British Columbia, an incident that has had significant political repercussions, including public accusations from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau against India.

Details of the Arrest and Accusations

The Canadian Police, on Friday, 3 May, successfully apprehended three members of what is described as a hit squad allegedly commissioned by the Indian government. These arrests occurred during coordinated police operations spanning at least two provinces. The suspects had been under tight surveillance for several months after being pinpointed by investigators, according to a CBC report.

Roles and Charges Filed

The arrested individuals are purported to have assumed various roles in the execution of Nijjar's murder at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey. These roles included those of shooters, drivers, and spotters. Legal proceedings initiated on the day of the arrest suggest that the conspiracy was active from 1 May 2023, until the day Nijjar was killed. The authorities are also exploring the suspects' connections to three other homicides, indicating a broader scope of criminal activity.

Reaction from India and Further Diplomatic Strains

The reaction from the Indian government was swift following the arrests and Trudeau’s allegations. India's Ministry of External Affairs has vehemently denied any involvement, dismissing Trudeau's comments as politically motivated and highlighting what it perceives as Canada’s leniency towards separatism and extremist activities. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal criticized the Canadian Prime Minister’s stance, suggesting that Trudeau’s remarks could potentially encourage divisive elements within Canada.

This case marks a significant moment in Canada - India relations, reflecting growing challenges in diplomacy between the two nations. As investigations continue and legal processes unfold, the international community watches closely. The outcomes of these events could define the future diplomatic trajectory between Canada and India, underscoring the delicate balance between national security and international cooperation.
