Introducing DAX Copilot: a groundbreaking AI Solution

The Ottawa Hospital, the largest medical facility in Ottawa, is currently testing DAX Copilot, an AI-powered program developed by Microsoft. This program is designed to assist physicians by creating preliminary clinical notes during patient appointments. Using advanced AI techniques, including ambient, conversational, and generative AI, DAX Copilot securely records interactions between doctors and patients. These recordings are then transformed into draft medical notes for the physicians to review, finalize, and enter into the hospital’s electronic health records system, Epic.

Addressing the administrative burden

Physicians in Canada, according to the Canadian Medical Association, spend around 10 hours each week on administrative tasks, such as charting patient information post-appointment. The Ottawa Hospital believes that the implementation of DAX Copilot will significantly reduce this administrative workload. Cameron Love, president and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital, highlighted that this reduction in administrative tasks will enable doctors to devote more time to patient care, thereby enhancing the quality of interactions and treatment provided.

The role of AI in patient care

Dr. Virginia Roth, Chief of Staff at The Ottawa Hospital, expressed her enthusiasm for the new system. She explained that the DAX Copilot functions similarly to a smartphone app, capturing the conversation between the physician and patient in the background. This conversation is then translated into a medical note that is securely added to the patient’s record. This innovative tool promises to free physicians from the extensive typing typically required during patient visits, allowing them to maintain better engagement with patients.

Ensuring patient consent and security

Patient consent is a critical component of the DAX Copilot’s operation. Before any appointment is recorded, patients must give their consent. This ensures that the process respects patient privacy and complies with ethical standards. Additionally, patients will have access to the notes from their appointments through the Ottawa Hospital MyChart patient portal, fostering transparency and allowing patients to stay informed about their medical care.

Real-world testing and results

Dr. Roth had the opportunity to test the DAX Copilot system and shared her positive experience. She noted that within 20 seconds of concluding a patient visit, the AI-generated note was available and highly accurate. The efficiency and accuracy of this system demonstrate its potential to revolutionize the administrative aspects of patient care, making it a valuable tool for physicians.
